Ein Nachmittag in Berlin
The brief was simple, fly to Berlin and assist in the art direction of the Foot Locker Back to School campaign with photographer and self-proclaimed ‘sneaker head’, Runner Wally.
Time was tight, but it was a sunny Sunday afternoon when I arrived, and the lure of exploring a new city was more appealing then simply checking in and finding the hotel bar.
My time in Berlin was short, so although I had numerous recommendations from friends and colleagues, I decided not to venture too far across the city’s various attractions in favour of a leisurely stroll around the local streets.
Mitte District After a quick bag drop at the Hotel Mani, I headed out to see what this city had to offer. Mitte is located in one of the numerous ‘city centres’ of Berlin (it’s a wall thing), so it wasn’t long before I came across a variety of decent shops. For those who like sportswear, check out the Nike Store, Sneakers’n’stuff, Converse and the Adidas Originals stores, which are all within walking distance of each other with plenty of retail in between.
For the design geeks, wander up to Type Hype and peruse the collection of alphabet inspired design products which are on display… Soya Skinny Latte with the hipster crowd is optional.
The Mitte district had proved fruitful but time was ticking and I’d now spent enough of it with the confused looking tourist crowd. I was thirsty for a real drink and I wanted to enjoy my first sip amongst the locals.
Kollwitzkiez District On a recommendation, I jumped in a cab and headed for the nearby district of Kollwitzkiez. Here is where I found Restaurant Pasternak, which is located amongst a selection of quaint little eateries with outdoor dining space, a very interesting water tower and the main attraction, Berliners. This is a great spot to sit and reflect on your day while enjoying an ice cold stein of the local tipple and sampling the cuisine which is a mix of Russo-Jewish fare. Es war ausgezeichnet!
After dinner, I fancied a night cap and my waitress recommended a little cocktail bar called Scotch & Sofa, which was on my route back to the hotel. After a classic Old Fashioned and a brief chat about Missouri’s client list with one of the mixologists, he decided to add some new cocktails to the menu.
After a few attempts, hic! The Chivas Manhattan and Black Barrel Sour were born! It was a great way to cap off (quite literally), what had simply been an afternoon in Berlin.
